Rockets are the only vehicles that travel at 11km per second ans so escape Earth's gravity and reach space. They carry space probes, satellites and astronauts.
The knowledge to travel into space was developed in the late 19th century, when the first rockets were designed. A significant step in space-rocket technology came in 1926 with the launch of the first liquid-fuel rocket. Designed and launched by the rocket scientist Robert Goddard, its flight lasted two and a half seconds and it reached a height of 12.5 metres. Robert Goddard was an an American rocket pioneer who lived between 1882-1945. His work, and that of other rocket scientists, led to the lauch of the first space rockets in the 1940s and 1950s.
